Drive In was recently discussed on the Mr. Guitar website discussion board. The tune was written by Jerry Reed (Hubbard), but for some reason Jerry used a nom de plume of Rich, which is a family name. Since that time guitarists have been confused, thinking that "Spider" Rich, a great guitarist and tunesmith wrote this one.

This is a pretty popular tune of Chet's and he has even performed it live since recording it.

I'm only able to hear three participants in the recording: Chet, a drummer, and a organist. The organist did not contribute anything significant to the recording and I made no attempt to transcribe his part. The drummer became a little more animated in the middle sections, a pleasant surprise, as most of Chet's drummers are very understated. In this transcription, the percussion part is a "reasonable facsimile", and not a true transcription.

This tune features Chet's Octabass guitar, a "George Harrison" Gretsch (a 6122, double cutaway) that has had the 6th and 5th strings replaced with short scale bass strings. This tune was recorded in the key of F. I'm not quite sure if Chet played it with a capo on the 1st fret, or just tuned a half step higher. I couldn't detect another bass, nor rhythm guitarist.

Years later, Chet replicated this guitar using a Gibson Country Gentleman.

Measure 1: In this measure and every repeat of it, Chet plays most of the notes staccato, except for the hammered note. It can be fingered many different ways. This way was the easiest for me and left my hand in position for the next measure.

Measure 8: This measure is repeated throughout the tune, and Chet varies the rhythm phrasing in almost every instance.

Measure 18: This measure can be played about as easily in the fifth and seventh position as second, but for me, it plays easier and the phrasing seems to be a more natural copy of Chet's phrasing.

Measure 24: Note that in the first chord there is a note on the 5th fret of the second string. I tried to use an open 1st string to get it, but the hand action, either muted the note or let it ring too long. It was just easier to play an "F#7" (actually, the tonality is a G7), barred.

Measure 34: Note that Chet varies the timing on this trill

Measure 35: I'm not sure if Chet meant to play the open 3rd string on the first beat or it just happened due to a hand movement. Either way it sounds good and natural, so for the sake of accuracy, I left it in. Jerry Reed is really fond of writing chords with hammers and pull off's in the middle of it. This A major chord should have a dedicated finger on each string, such as 2 on 4, 3 on 3, and 4 on 2..

Measure 40: Chet doesn't really play the note on the fifth string, 2nd fret.

Measure 42: The choked note is actually choked less than a 1/4 tone, so TablEdit sounds just a little sharper than the recording. But it sounds better than leaving it out.

Measure 66:  Note that Chet ends here, but the organist plays a little blues lick at the end.c0w$(->C%).38Chetc0$(-27Timing/Chordscb(0#!*"'/+4CCCCPercussionitar001101110000=007:>899<>7F000P042S0//0000000000001EE1/1110010::::H<100001000000000000008V0000000Page &p / &n&c&2&t &c&6&s &r&3&m &r&3&t - &3&s
