Don't Let Your Deal Go Down is part of a project I've dreamed about since my early teens. At that time I was an aspiring thumblick guitar picker that played bluegrass with my neighbors and friends. Very seldom did they let me take a break on tunes because I really didn't know how to in the keys that bluegrass groups played traditional tunes. A few years ago, I began to realize my lifetime dream and Don't Let Your Deal Go Down is the latest in a series that includes the Salty Dog, John Henry, and Farewell Blues.

The "Deal" has a special meaning to me. In the 1920's, Charlie Poole and the North Carolina Ramblers had a "megahit" of the era with their recording of the Deal. My great Uncle Norman Woodlieff played guitar on that and Charlie's earliest recordings.

The arrangement comprises the following parts/instruments:

1. Banjo lead and backup: The banjo lead is an arrangement based on the recordings of Earl Scruggs. I wrote the backup part in the style of Earl's backup banjo. No one has ever duplicated or improved upon Earl's backup work. He usually played that part up high on the neck. The closest midi sound I was able to use is the muted note which is a poor substitute. Jack Baker REALLY cleaned it up and got it sounding very Earl-like.

2. Guitar: The backup and lead are original parts by me. Due to the volume generated by the other instruments, this part does not mute the basses as many thumblick arrangements do. The part doesn't stray too far from the melody and would be a very good beginning thumblick guitar lesson. Measures 64 and 65 is my adaptation of a lick attributed to Ike Everly. Merle Travis played this lick in the key of D in the Ike Everyly Rag, and Thom Bresh played it in the key of E as an ending for the Guitar Rag. I was surprised to find that it worked so well in the key of F.

3. "Doc Hopkins": This guitar part was found on the internet and supposedly is Doc Watson's version. I tweaked it just a bit, and renamed it "Doc Hopkins" as a tongue in cheek salute to Doc. On the legendary first Nitty Gritty Dirt Band "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" album, Merle Travis meets Doc for the first time and Merle tells him that "people say to me 'you know Doc Hopkins?' and I say 'no, I never did meet him.'" One has to love ole Merle!! I have no idea who originally worked on the transcription of Doc's part, but I doubt if he'd recognize his work. If Doc were really playing with us, he'd be playing all kinds of fills and different licks. No attempt was made to create additional breaks and backup for Doc's part.

4. Mandolin and Fiddle: Paul Doty wrote the mandolin and fiddle parts.

5. Bass: This part is an original by me.

6. Dobro: Norm Van Maastricht wrote the Dobro breaks. This is the first TEF to our knowledge that has a Dobro break in it, and quite a bit of time was put on getting a midi sound similiar to a Dobro. Paul added some fills and I edited it a bit.
