P. Carter. In the early 1960's Flatt and Scruggs recorded a tribute album to the Carter Family and featured the Foggy Mountain Top with Earl playing the leads on the banjo. Until Flatt and Scruggs signed their contract with Martha White Mills, The Foggy Mountain Top was in fact their theme song.

The Carter Family tribute album had 12 tunes with Earl playing the guitar on 8. As he is primarily known as a banjo player, I'm sure the 4 tunes with the 5-string were to placate their banjo loving fans. Fact is, Earl preferred to use the guitar on Carter tunes. Worried Man Blues and Foggy Mountain Top were frequently featured on their shows and Earl usually played them on the guitar, although the LP album recorded him on the banjo. Other tunes such as Can the Circle Be Unbroken, Amber Tresses, Have You Seen My Dear Companion, just to name a couple, featured Earl's guitar licks.

I recently found on the Internet a 1962 video of Flatt and Scruggs preforming with Mama Maybelle Carter. The show had a number of Carter tunes, such as Foggy Mountain Top, You Are My Flower, On the Rock Where Moses Stood (Cryin' Holy), and Gold Watch and Chain. The group plays Foggy Mountain Top in the key of F. Earl takes every break, a la Mama Maybelle, and he capos on the 5th fret and plays as if he were in the key of C. Lester Flatt sings and accompanies the group with his guitar capoed on the 1st fret and he plays as if he were in the key of E. Mama Maybelle is standing next to Earl and playing rhythm on the autoharp.

To get a similar sound as Earl, you're going to have to play with a thumb and at least a metal finger pick on the index finger. Earl is playing the melody on the bass strings while brushing down with his first finger and then brushing up most of the time only catching one or two strings on the up stroke. Many folks have a problem with this technique as their finger pick catches on the down stroke. A little practice soon overcomes this problem. When Earl plays this style he keeps the index finger going in the down/up brush even behind the bass notes, but at a lesser dynamic. Sometimes he doesn't even touch the strings, as if he is using it as a technique to keep time.

Earl strikes the bass strings with a pretty healthy thumb lick, often striking more than one string. As he is holding a chord form and playing the melody from it, this technique, which is very autoharpist, just adds harmony notes.

When Mama Maybelle played this style she played the brush much stronger than Earl does, whereas Earl prefers to actuate the melody.

The three versions that Earl plays are 95% identical with just very minor variations. There are no tricky passages or licks that require a lot of study. It's just pure Carter Family style with a simple elegance.

Finding this version was an emotional experience for me as I remember as a young teenager seeing this TV program when it first aired. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did listening and transcribing it.
