See NotesIn the 1960's this was a frequent instrumental tune for Banjoist Earl Scruggs, playing the guitar. Flatt and Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys featured Earl on the guitar during spirituals (the banjo was thought to be the devil's instrument and traditionally was not used often performing religious music by many bluegrass groups.)

Earl also performed many of the famous Carter Family songs on the guitar. Although Earl is known as the father of modern 5-string banjo playing, some of Flatt and Scruggs' best sellers featured Earl's guitar playing: You are my Flower, Jimmy Brown the Newsboy, Cabin on the Hill.

Three of my favorite Earl Scruggs' guitar pieces are: The Nine Pound Hammer, The Cannonball Blues, and The Little Rosewood Casket. The Little Rosewood Casket is the only tune that I can remember Earl playing using the open position A major chord forms.

With Flatt and Scruggs' popularity at an all time high due to the Foggy Mountain Breakdown used as the theme to the movie "Bonnie and Clyde", the group recorded a theme album of songs/instrumentals to cash in on this popularity. Earl with his son Randy on 12-string guitar, and Uncle Josh Graves on the dobro guitar recorded "The Little Rosewood Casket" under the name "Reunion." Actually, if the song had been recorded under its real name, it still would have been in character for the movie. By the way, this tune was not in the movie.

The tune practically plays itself. Earl used a capo on the second fret to use open A position chord forms while actually playing in the key of B. Although not on the recording I remember Earl substituting measure 52 for measures 11, 27, or 43. This provides the only difficulty in the tune, where an F# on the 6th string must be noted during a stretch out of a D chord form that has an A from the 5th fret, 1st string. Earl noted this with his thumb. I am not physically able to do that on my guitars, so I note this F# with my 1st finger and am careful not to strike any additional strings.

Rhythm Guitar: I transcribed Earl's backup to the dobro and 12-string guitars and used it as the rhythm for his lead. Earl used fingerpicks. The Mama Maybelle Carter strum is with the first finger brushing down, and then up. Due to the curvature of the pick, I have noted that the upstroke seems to actuate the first string it comes in contact with. It is a difficult sound to imitate without using a fingerpick; however, with a fingerpick, it is very natural movement.

The 12-string solo sounds so much like the 6-string solo and because the audio of Tabledit doesn't do a very good job imitating a 12-string, I didn't transcribe it. Also, I don't know anything about a dobro (Lester Flatt called it the "hounddog" guitar.) I will work with anyone that could help me with this.c0w#',16 %).38Earl Scruggsc0#',16Rhythm Guitar001101110000=007:>899<>7F000P043S0/02000000000001EE1/1111030::::<<100001000000000000008V0000000Page &p / &n&c&2&t &c&6&s &r&3&m &r&3&t - &3&s
