By Shel Silverstein

Chorus:

I been a long time workin' it out,
I been a long time workin' it out,
I been a long time workin' it out,
I been a long time workin' it out.

1st Verse

Well, I'm spendin' my life just a looking for a shoulder
To rest my head when the nights grow colder.
Days are gettin' shorter and I'm a gettin' older,
It's a long time workin' it out.

Chorus

2nd Verse

Well I gotta a little woman just to scrub my floors,
Down the road, I got two or three more.
None of them knows about the one next door,
I been a long time workin' it out.

Chorus

Intrumental break

3rd Verse

Well, it was late one night when I stole me some money
And a diamond ring just to give my honey.
Judge said "Boy, if you think that's funny,
It's a long time workin' it out."

Chorus

4th Verse

Well, I look all around me and what do I see?
The whole wide world's got troubles like me.
Between taxes and missles and the deep blue sea,
It's a long time workin' it out.

Chorus

2nd Instrumental Break.

I remember the first time I ever heard "Workin' It Out". It was a Saturday in the mid 1960's and that meant being at home to watch Flatt and Scruggs' Martha White Grand Ole Opry. After the opening tune and their special guest, Lester Flatt said "We have a brand new single on Columbia that we'd like to pick for you. Earl..." The camera panned to a seated Earl Scruggs holding a Gibson B45-12N 12-string guitar. The 12-string guitar was a big favorite of folk singers and the recent British Invasion featured a lot of electric 12-string licks, but this was a first, not only with Earl playing a 12-string, but seated as well. Workin' It Out turned out to be one of their best sellers of all time, although Earl began to use his D-18 Martin instead of that big 12-string in later live performances. Workin' It Out was written by a folk singer more famous for being a cartoonist in Playboy Magazine, Shel Silverstein. Sony has a CD with Flatt and Scruggs' Greatest Hits and Workin' It Out can be found on it.

The actual guitar lead in the recording comprises the three-measure intro and two eight-measure breaks. Earl plays some tasty bass runs behind Lester Flatt's vocal. Since most of us will play this as an instrumental, I've taken the background licks and made them into a lead. All of Earl's licks from the original recording are here, but perhaps not quite in the order from the recording. There was two guitars, a bass, and a snare drum in the original recording and at times it was difficult if not impossible to separate the parts. For those that are purists and want a complete transcription, please look at Measure 50 until the end.

To get a sound like Earl, you're going to need to use fingerpicks. I, like so many owners of 12-string guitars, tune my 12-string down a whole tone, so I need to put the capo on the 3rd fret, rather than 1st as the music shows. The last few measures of the 1st instrumental break has a characteristic 12-string bass run. Earl never played this the same way twice and you wouldn't be out of character if you invented your own.

This is not particularly difficult to play if one can get their thumb action going. There is no unusual or difficult fingerings and it pretty much plays itself within chord forms. A little bit of palm muting on the basses works great, but the effect is lost in TablEdit's 12-string emulation and I've left it out.

This tune is particularly suited for Sing Along's where one writes new lyrics. As a teenager in the '60 playing Folk Music, we had a lot of fun making up X-rated lyrics. It's probably passe in this century.
