You AreLast of 6th time throughnEarl Scruggs recorded this tune three times with Lester Flatt: Songs of the Carter Family (With Mother Maybelle Carter playing the high variation on her black Gibson f-hole guitar), this version on the Live at Vanderbilt University album, and lastly a 45 rpm single. The single was one of the best selling tunes that the group ever did. With the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in the legendary "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" album, Earl plays the lead while I believe John McEuen sings. I prefer this version as it is a little longer than the 45 version and Earl gets to play a little more. All the licks from the short version are in this. I added a rhythm guitar section just to make the tune sound more like a song and give the single note melody a little harmony. It is not a transcription. Earl used a plastic thumbpick and National finger picks when he played this. In the first section, he plays the melody with his thumb and strums down and up with his first finger on the 2nd and 4th beats. Most of the time on the up stroke he just catches one or two strings at most. On the high variation he plays one measure as a thumblick tune then the rest of the melody as single notes. Note in the thumblick measure he does not mute the basses like Merle Travis or Chet Atkins did. I tried to note the picking patterns of the right hand. Measure 23: Lester Flatt begins singing. Since Earl is mostly playing G and D7 chords I left the vocal leads off. The famous run that is used when going to D7 is the same as in the second variation.
