John Williams once referred to Barrios as the greatest guitar composer ever.   This piece is similar to most of Barrios' works in that it is difficult to play.  Stretches of 5 and 6 frets are found and also, the piece requires that one tune the 5th and 6th strings down to G and D.

Probably the first thing that one should learn about this piece is how to pronounce it en a manner that could be understood by a Brazilian:  SHOW-roo DAH sow-DAH-ghee.  Although Barrios was a Paraguayan this piece is written in the style of early 20th Century Brazilian street music called Choros.  A choro is more often than not written in a minor key and generally written as a rondo, that is, the sections are played A - B - A - C - A.  Choro da Saudade is an example of that.

Saudade, according to my Brazilian friends, does not translate to just one word.  It's an expression of a deep sorrow, such as losing a loved one due to death, or a debilitating homesickness.  It was once described to me as if someone had taken a shovel and removed one's chest.  They also said you don't translate "saudade", you feel it.

Chet's version of Choro da Saudade is a little different than most; and therefore, I decided to transcribe it as closely to his version (as opposed to the readily available written manuscripts.)  As this is a guitar solo, all guitarists (that I have recordings of Choro da Saudade) take liberties with the time to evoke the emotion the composition is about.
