So that Sunday morning as I was preparing breakfast for a friend and me, I put that lp on. When it came to El Relicario, my friend started singing the song. I had never heard the words before and was really interested in them. She explained that her mother was from the Catalonia province in Spain and used to sing the tune to her. The melody is upbeat, but the words are sad and are about a young girl meeting the most famous Bull Fighter, only to have him die in the Plaza de Toros later that day. El Relicario (which translates to "The Prayer Box") is a "Pasodoble", a stately dance based on military march time. I have to be honest and say that I had a lot of problems with the transcription due to what I have come to believe is the changing of time between 2/4 and 3/4 that Chet put into this arrangement. Another pleasing aspect of this arrangement is that Chet played it I believe as a solo, as I couldn't discern any other instrument in the recording. Playing El Relicario: This piece is played very much like a classical guitar or even a simple Flamenco tune may be played. Much of the melody is played with the A finger and the accompaniment is played by the P and I M. Measure 58, 1st beat: Chet plays a "rasqueado", by holding an E chord, and with the right hand he brushes down starting with his pinkie (C finger in classical notation), then the A, next M, and finally I. This technique is also featured in the ending. Measure 64, 1st beat: Chet plays the bass note so softly that is is almost inaudible.
