After you have 'got it under your hands', try muting the guitar module and playing along with the comp parts. Historical information about the tune is below.
                                   Marching Through Georgia

Henry Clay Work (1832-1884) was born in Middletown, Connecticut and began to work in a printing shop in Chicago in 1854. He started to write songs encouraged by the minstrel E.P. Christy, and then under contract to Root and Cady, music publishers.

He gained much success during the Civil War. His only equals as composers of songs in this period were Stephen Foster and George Frederick Root. Work's most famous songs include "Come Home", "Kingdom Coming" (1862), "The Ship That Never Returned" and "My Grandfather's Clock"

Marching Through Georgia, first published in 1865, was written to celebrate General Sherman's capture of Atlanta and famous devastating 300-mile month-long march at the end of 1864, "from Atlanta to the Sea". Ironically, it was Sherman -always sympathetic to the South and no friend to blacks- who delivered the event that saved Lincoln’s presidency, and probably the Union.

Marching Through Georgia was one of the most popular Civil War songs for decades after the Civil War, but it was also extremely unpopular in the South, as it seemed to praise the often senseless destruction that Sherman's army inflicted on Atlanta and Georgia. However, it must be recalled that Atlanta and Georgia were the center of Confederate supplies; it was terrible but it hastened the end of perhaps the United States darkest period.

This tune is a 'standard' for old time fiddlers but has become quaint in the light of contest fiddling and is rapidly becoming a forgotten song. When the old boys are gone, this tune will be too except for archives.

Lyrics:
---------------------------------------------

Bring the good old bugle, boys! we'll sing another song
Sing it with a spirit that will start the world along
Sing it as we used to sing it fifty thousand strong,
While we were marching through Georgia.

"Hurrah! Hurrah! we bring the Jubilee!
Hurrah! Hurrah! the flag that makes you free!"
So we sang the chorus from Atlanta to the sea,
While we were marching through Georgia.

How the darkeys shouted when they heard the joyful sound!
How the turkeys gobbled which our commissary found!
How the sweet potatoes even started from the ground,
While we were marching through Georgia.

"Hurrah! Hurrah! we bring the Jubilee!
Hurrah! Hurrah! the flag that makes you free!"
So we sang the chorus from Atlanta to the sea,
While we were marching through Georgia.

Yes, and there were Union men who wept with joyful tears,
When they saw the honor'd flag they had not seen for years;
Hardly could they be restrained from breaking forth in cheers,
While we were marching through Georgia.

"Hurrah! Hurrah! we bring the Jubilee!
Hurrah! Hurrah! the flag that makes you free!"
So we sang the chorus from Atlanta to the sea,
While we were marching through Georgia.

"Sherman's dashing Yankee boys will never reach the coast!"
So the saucy rebels said, and 'twas a hand some boast,
Had they not forgot, alas! to reckon with the host,
While we were marching through Georgia.

"Hurrah! Hurrah! we bring the Jubilee!
Hurrah! Hurrah! the flag that makes you free!"
So we sang the chorus from Atlanta to the sea,
While we were marching through Georgia.

So we made a thoroughfare for Freedom and her train,
Sixty miles in latitude -- three hundred to the main;
Treason fled before us for resistance was in vain,
While we were marching through Georgia.

"Hurrah! Hurrah! we bring the Jubilee!
Hurrah! Hurrah! the flag that makes you free!"
So we sang the chorus from Atlanta to the sea,
While we were marching through Georgia.cw %).38%).38 Acoustic Guitarcb
