The cover shows Gretsch guitars, but to me it sure sounded like his D'Angelico. This tune was a hit for Nick Lucas (#1); Jean Goldkette (#5); Johnny Marvin (#11); and Roy Foz (#18). But for our generation the most "FORGETABLE" version was by Tiny Tim where it actually got up to # 17 in 1968. Chet's version is a great one (to me at least) for a number of reasons: It's an honest to goodness solo with no gimmicks (well, not too many, anyway!), overdubs, other musicians, etc. It's too bad Chet didn't record more tunes that way. He uses a lot of techniques that weren't cliches. His arrangement let me music speak for itself, without any distracting virtuoso signatures. He took a relatively simple arrangement and did a wonderful job playing it. If one can play the first 8 measures, then he can play this entire arrangement. Chet used a little echo, approximately an 1/8th note offset. Measures 1 through 4 (Intro): Note from the recording Chet is playing muted notes but the open 1st string wants to ring clean. The scale of thirds can be played on the 1st and 2nd strings, but it was easier to me to play them on the 2nd and 3rd strings and get a sound closer to what Chet got. Measure 8: Note that Chet borrows a little time from the previous beat to arpeggiate that D min6 chord on the 4th beat. He uses that technique in many places throughout this arrangement. Measure 11, 2nd beat: The A chord is reverse arpeggiated by dragging the thumbpick up. I personally use my A finger and pull it through the strings. Measure 19, 2nd beat: Chet plays this chord very staccato, removing his lefthand finger almost immediately after playing it and with no ringing of the chord to speak of. Note the scale he plays afterwards decreases in dynamics the lower the notes are. Measure 20, 2nd beat: Note this A9+5 chord. In all the transcriptions I've done of Chet's arrangements, this is the first time I've seen this chord form.
