Jack Baker originally transcribed the first half in 2000. I added the rhythm guitar, bass, and percussion module. Here are a couple of things I found really interesting about Chet's philosophy on arranging and writing a variation. 1. If you overlay what Jack did of the first pass on top of this TEF, it may look just a hair different, but it's essentially what Jack transcribed. I'm not sure if Chet used that "Invisible bass player" on this but I noticed that most of his 1st and 3rd beats had an octave lower counterpart where that lowered bass note was stronger than the real bass part. Since I added a bass line, I lowered the dynamics of the 1st and 3rd beats to a "f", but kept the 2nd and 4th at the "ff" (at least the lower note of the chord pair). On my computer it really sounds like Chet's phrasing. 2. I transcribed Chet's 2nd pass. To me it's a little more interesting than many of his solos. I noticed that Chet played the 2nd part a lower lower in dynamics than the 1st half, so note that I've used a lot more "mf" and "mp" than in the first part. Note in the 2nd part Chet's use of simple triads and melody chords right out of Mickey Baker's (and Johnny Smith's) tool box! Chet doesn't play them in the Rare Performances video solo. I imagine it's because he's playing the tune about 50% faster than the CA at Home recording. Also, when I listened to it, what struck me as different from many of Chet's recordings is that the Bass player is given a lot of liberty here. Most of the time Chet's bass players do the absolute minimum and nothing to detract full attention from Chet. The bass player gets to play some walking bass here and some interesting lead-in's. It isn't a Ray Brown or a Joe Byrd, but it's pretty refreshing to me. 3. I tried to transcribe the percussion, but all I really could hear were brushes on a cymbal. It may not be exactly the same sound, but I think I got the rhythm pretty close to the recording. 4. The rhythm guitar was really in the background, so I just wrote a rhythm guitar part, based on the chords found in the first part. It sounds pretty close to what the recording sounds like. 5. On my computer, the MIDI playback still "spits" on long slides. I tried a lot of stuff to minimize it, but this was about as good as I could get it. My computer is a laptop and the sound card is not in the same league as even cheap sound cards for desktops. If you're using anything but the latest beta from TablEdit some other stuff might not sound so hot as well.
