Paul Doty:

A great old standard, done beautifully by the Old Master. The recording was pretty heavily phased. The modules are preset at max chorus and medium reverb to replicate it (sort of). If you would prefer it without, just turn them to zero and save it.
I have included (but did not insert) text commands for medium reverb and maximum chorus in the text editor. Your soundcard may support these midi controller commands even if you don't usually hear effects through Tabledit; you'll just have to try it. Insert the first 2 text strings at the beginning of bar 1. Be sure to insert the second 2 text strings at the end of the last bar to turn the effects off.
SB Live supports the midi controllers for pitch bend, so I used it for the bigsby dip in the intro; it is a great deal more realistic than the effect applied by TE. You may or may not be able to hear it with your soundcard. SB Live does not support reverb mapping to midi, but it does support the chorus. Roland VSC88 and JetMidi support both. As an aside, this tab sounds pretty wonderful with the Roland, primarily because of it's superior 'jazz' guitar sample and the great Roland effects engine..
If you have SBLive and the Roland VSC88 (and want to jump through the hoops ), go the EAX control panel and call up Guitar Concert Hall. I usually set the reverb at 40%. chorus at about 15& and the dry sound 100%. This seems to give a pleasant effect to most tabs that incorporate these settings. To make this tab sound as much like the recording as possible, add the flanger. I use the 'Guitar Flanger1' in 'normal' mode with the amount set to 90%. You should then turn down the chorus in the tab to about 50%. It's about close as a computer will get to sounding like Chet. This will only work on the Roland (or JetMidi); Creative doesn't seem to be able to apply the effect to midi output. The down side to this is that the effects are global and will be applied to every sound coming out of your computer. This is pretty disconcerting with the usual pops and clicks, and positively annoying on pre-recorded music. It's unfortunate Creative's implementation wasn't more thoughtfully handled, but the bottom line is; you'll have to turn it on and off to keep from making yourself crazy.
This tab is largely the work of Mike Joyce with contributions by Paul Doty. We both made alterations to the old archived tab done by Pascal Savoye and wanted to give him credit as well for the original effort. Special thanks to Russ Jenkins for finding some clinkers that needed fixing and repairing my bass line; also to Tony Willis for creating the midi controller tabs at the TE website. He's taught me a lot just by example. One more thing: If you have X-ed out notes in the tab on the 'dead' notes, open up the special effects dialog under Note in the tool bar and un-check the box beside Dead Note.

Mike Joyce:

First of all, let me say that working with Paul directly and Pascal, indirectly, was a musician's treat. Palmer Moore asked me sometime ago if I could add the Latin middle part to the transcription that Pascal had done. Paul Doty sort of encouraged me to attempt it. Pascal's work on the thumblick versions was excellent and very little editing was done. Here are some notes to maybe help with the trouble spots:

Measures 11, 27, 79, 95 : The B7 chord is a bear to get into, but the bass sound of the B going to a D# (a major third) is a little more pleasing than say B going to an F#, using a barred B7 on the second fret. I have a video of Chet playing this tune about 10 years after this recording, and he uses the barred B7 chord. So you can do as Chet and take your pick.

Measure 15, 31, 83, 99: Note Chet uses two different chords. The first time with an F and the last three times with the open D. In the video I have, Chet actually plays a G9 chord: B/5th, F/4th, A/3rd, D/2nd (these are the notes and strings.) So now you can pick three different chords to use!

Measures 19, 86: On the last beat of the measure, it seems like Chet takes the dim 7 chord and moves it 3 frets higher to get the F# note that he continues to slide to the A. In the video-tape of Chet playing this as a solo on a Gibson flattop guitar, he doesn't play the bass on the 3rd and 4th beats.

Measures 23: This F#7 is one of the chord voicings that make Chet's arrangements so different than the others. It's a difficult stretch, but well worth the effort. This chord form can be found in Chet's recordings of the Nine Pound Hammer and I Am a Pilgrim (in the E position), and Muskrat Ramble (E and F# position).

Measure 27: Note Chet changes the chord here by changing the A on the 3rd string to an A#. A real nice touch.

Measure 46: The vibrato seems to be a lefthand vibrato, rather than a Bigsby. Although there are Bigsby dips in this piece, the vibratos are all done by the left hand like a violist (or a classical guitarist.)

Measures 49, 50, and 51: It sounds like Chet is playing this P, I, P, I, etc. Each note is distinct and ends before the next.

Measure 58, 59, 60, and 61: These measures all blend in and it was extremely difficult to pick out Chet from the rest. It is my very least favorite part of this transcription. If anyone has a different view of these measures, I'd love to hear about it.

Measure 117: Paul and I both agree that the very last note was actually an harmonic that Chet muffed. The result gives a unique note that is half harmonic and half open string. The closest I could come to consistently duplicating the sound is tabbed. I've heard Chet quoted as saying "there is no such thing as a mistake, only different notes." Well, this, I believe, was a unique note! It was a nice effect that Chet only used once in his recording career.
